James Humberstone is Senior Lecturer and Program Leader of the Bachelor of Music (Music Education), at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the University of Sydney. A frequently performed composer, James’ most recent works include Odysseus : Live, a cross-genre retelling of Homer’s epic in spoken word poetry and rap for orchestra, choir, electronics and videography; and Noise Husbandry, an interactive electro-acoustic installation piece on board a submarine and destroyer at Darling Harbour’s Australian National Maritime Music.

At the Sydney Con James lectures on composition and technology in music education, educational methods, and popular music; and his traditional research outcomes have recently included a chapter in the new Oxford University Press Handbook of Technology and Music Education (2017), a paper at the Glasgow ISME conference on BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) solutions in Music Education (2016), and the journal article The Glitter Gang (1973–74): A Microcosm of Malcolm Williamson’s Views on Social Inclusivity and His Australian Identity, co-authored with Dr Carolyn Philpott, which was published in Musicology Australia (2016).
