Audio editing and recording software is typically used for quick and convenient recording (eg directly from a microphone into your computer) and editing of wave-forms (eg pitch, tempo and dynamic changes). Most editors accept audio files from Sequencing & Recording and Video editing software as well as portable memory recorders. Most are also 2 track editors (ie stereo) although Adobe Audition is a full multi-track recorder PLUS a 2-track editor. A very useful program for general use is Audacity and it is recommended that ALL computers should have this installed. Audacity is a Freeware program (PC and Mac) and can be downloaded here.
